Cowling

 Originally, the top cowling on the OX-5 Jennies had a simple cut edge which seemed to me to be rather flimsy.  But, since our cowl fits the Hisso engine, I decided to make a wire edge around the cylinder banks.  This added strength in this area.

 
 
 
 

Also, lots of time was spent getting everything lined up for final drilling. 


 First, small pilot holes were drilled into the wood.


Then, larger holes were drilled into the sheet metal and a #6 brass screw was put in place.  During the final assembly, small brass washers will be put under the head of each screw.


All the holes were drilled for the lower, side, upper and cockpit cowls.  Here is where we stand today:





The fuselage is just about ready to cover.  We have a few more odds and ends yet - riveting the windshields and adding the leather straps around the top cowl - but we are getting close.

Right side cowl

 The hinges were installed on the right side access door yesterday.


As were the hinges on the big door.


Lastly, Ron and Brian started taping the upper left wing.

Murphy Fasteners

The left side door hinges were riveted today.


And the three Murphy Fasteners clips were riveted to the side cowl.


This is how they all fit together.

Cowl Riveting and Murphy Fasteners

Let the riveting begin !!  Today, the left side panel door had the rivets installed.


 The louver brackets were secured with some soft aluminum AN470-5-3 rivets.


 When the door was finished, the louvers on the left side panel were riveted.


Here you can see the back side of the side cowl showing all the brackets.


Also, the three hinges were riveted too.


Now it is time to install the Murphy Fasteners.  These three piece spring loaded clips hold the door closed.

       
First, the holes for the receptacle were cut.  I used a drill bit to make the openings and a Dremel tool to clean them to size.


Then the receptacle is fitted into the slots, the backing plate installed, and the tabs bent over.


 I only got two of the three Murphy Fasteners installed today before I ran out of time -  I promised the wife and kids that I would take them swimming.  Anyway, you can see the two fasteners in place on the outside of the door and the tape marking the location of the third fastener.


Lastly, I went to MSC on the way home from work yesterday.  I picked up some copper rivets for the windshield frame.


I only need a dozen, so I'm saving the rest for you future Jenny builders!

Front windshield and cockpit brackets

 On the inside of each windshield frame, there is a strip of .032 aluminum that "sandwiches" the lexan.  I used the windshield frame pattern, moved it up 1/2 inch and cut out the bottom strip.


 Then, the strip bends inside the frame and the corresponding holes are drilled.  This is looking inside the frame.  The curved flange attaches to the cockpit sheet metal.

 Both the front and rear frames are ready for riveting.  I have to go to MSC tomorrow after work and pick up some copper rivets for the copper section of the frame.

 

ANATOMY OF A BRACKET

This shows the steps required to make one simple bracket - cut strip from sheet steel (3/4 in) - measure 3/4 inch ends - bend- cut - round edges - drill.


It does not seem like much, but five brackets are needed.  They hold the sheetmetal to the instrument panel like shown below.

update

Sorry, I have not posted anything for a while, but we had our big Vintage Day event at our museum so most of our time has been spent preparing for that.  We had a great turnout, spectacular weather and a fun time.


Then I headed off to Europe (work) but after seven days, I'm back. So, expect to see Jenny progress pictures in a few days.  Until then, John Slemp sent me a picture of Lindbergh's jenny at the Cradle of Aviation Museum on Long Island NY.

I have never been to this museum, so it was good to see a picture of this Jenny.

Lastly, actor Harrison Ford stopped by the museum the other day.  He was filming a movie in Atlanta and brought a Cessna 182 with him so he could fly around the area and check out the local airports.  We are glad he chose to stop at Peach State Aerodrome!
